What is Self Care, Anyway?

Self Care=Self Knowing, The Truth of Self Care

We are constantly hearing about self-care. Especially if you are a healthcare provider, mental health professional or educator.

“What do you do for self-care?”

“Make sure you have a self-care routine!”

I spent years knowing that I “should” be engaging in self-care, but I had no idea what that really meant.  I couldn’t figure out why it was so difficult to know what my go to self-care practices were. And I definitely didn’t feel like I had space or energy to implement them. Over the years, I have come to understand that the reason I couldn’t put my finger on a self-care routine, is that self-care depends on what is needed at any given moment, and it’s constantly changing. I have learned that the truth of self-care is that self-care is self-knowing.

In Eastern culture Mind and Heart are the same word. Being attuned with your Wise Heart means being in alignment and connection with your true self. This could also be referred to as Self, Self-energy, Self-leadership, Wise Self, or Intuitive Self. To know what is needed at any given moment, you must learn to listen to your inner voice that is sometimes just a whisper. Or a feeling in our gut that can be difficult to decipher or know what to do with the information we receive.  Imagine if you had a “seek” button like on a radio, and at any moment could tune into the clear signal of your heart and mind. This is the path of self-care.

Often those who need self-care the most tend to focus on helping others and find it difficult to care for themselves. Perhaps they can tune into what they want or need, but they might have difficulty prioritizing themselves, setting boundaries, or have beliefs about their own worthiness that gets in the way of centering themselves in their lives. Many people fall into the trap of blaming external circumstances as reasons for not being able to take care of themselves and focus on their needs. But the truth is, one must look inward and ask, “what am I believing that is getting in the way of prioritizing myself?”

Through (1) Cultivating practices to attune to your heart, (2) Listening to the needs of your body, heart, and mind and (3) Understanding what is getting in the way of leading from your Wise Heart, self-care is no longer a struggle. It becomes clear what is needed at any given moment and how to honor your time, energy, and needs.

When you know yourself, you always have the key to attending to your needs and this allows for tremendous freedom!

I have designed a program using Mindfulness and foundational practices as the ground of the program. Currently this program is being offered to Mental Health Professionals, Healthcare Providers and Educators.

In this program you will have the opportunity to explore a range of foundational practices allowing you to connect more fully to your heart, body, mind. Through these practices you will further cultivate the compassion, curiosity, acceptance, non-judgment and equanimity that already exists within you.

Through the modules you will be offered different tools and practices to try on for size so that you can see what resonates with your Wise Heart. By the end of the program, you will have your own formula for self-care that is unique to you and your heart that you can continue to come back to, adjust, and further cultivate as time goes on. This will be a journey of self-discovery and exploration within yourself. Self care=Self knowing. This is the truth of self-care.
